Eastern Pondhawk dragonfly (immature male)

The following photograph shows an Eastern Pondhawk dragonfly (Erythemis simplicicollis) eating a Yellow Fly (Genus Diachlorus). Eastern Pondhawk dragonflies are voracious predators. See a close-up version, cropped from the same photo.

Eastern Pondhawk dragonfly (immature male, eating a Yellow Fly)

The dragonfly was spotted on the earthen dam at Hidden Pond, Meadowood Recreation Area, Fairfax County, Virginia USA. This individual is an immature male, as indicated by its green coloration and terminal appendages.
