Life and death at Occoquan Bay

An Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) was spotted perched on a dead tree limb overhanging Fox Road at Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge, Prince William County, Virginia USA. This individual, possibly a male, is shown with a fish in its talons.

The fish appears to be an unknown species of goldfish. Did you notice the drop of blood in the preceding photo?

Nice shot, Walter. The osprey must have just caught the shiny fish that it was displaying so nicely for you. All too often I come across osprey that have already eaten the head of the fish.

Thanks, Mike! The catch of the day was in fact fresh. Another photographer and his wife shot photos of the Osprey when it caught the fish in Occoquan Bay and flew toward the shore — the Osprey must have flown along Fox Road until it reached the perch where I spotted it.
