American Carrion Beetles feed on carrion, fungus, or in this case, sapping tree wounds. Mark Jette spotted these odd-looking insects near the beginning of one of the informal trails at the park, and identified them a few days later.

Click Beetle (Family Elateridae)

There are so many genera and species of click beetles that the experts on BugGuide were unable to identify this individual beyond Family Elateridae. This specimen was spotted along Deer Trail, a gravel trail through the forest at Huntley Meadows.

Eyed Click Beetle (Alaus oculatus)

As its name suggests, Eyed Click Beetles feature two large eyespots, presumably an adaptation intended to frighten predators. This individual was spotted near the Visitor Center, along Cedar Trail.

Six-spotted Tiger Beetle (Cicindela sexguttata)

The author has observed Six-spotted Tiger Beetles (Cicindela sexguttata) at many locations in the park. They can be quite skittish sometimes, but with persistence, it is possible to get close enough to photograph these spectacularly beautiful metallic green beetles.
